Presenters included noted experts from the CDC, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Vanderbilt University, University of Rochester, Mississippi Department of Health, Florida Department of Health, South Carolina Department of Health, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and Emory University. The conference improved the community’s understanding of the virus’s current status, history and pathogenesis; disease modeling, surveillance and vaccine development, as well as state public health plans to address influenza throughout the region.
Objectives:
- Review the history and threat of pandemic influenza
- Discuss influenza vaccine development and strategies
- Share current knowledge of clinical features and pathogenesis of influenza viruses
- Share southeast regional experiences
- Identify and share best practices
- Identify and prioritize key research questions and develop research strategies
- Support regional collaborations that leverage the national efforts of state public health programs and the CDC
