UTHSC Hosts National Flue Vaccine Conference

Memphis, Tennessee (June 7, 2005) – The National Flu Vaccine Conference being held in Memphis June 17th is drawing healthcare leaders from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and major pharmaceutical companies.

The event is co-hosted by the University of Tennessee Health Science Center Mid-South Center for Biodefense and Security in partnership with the CDC and the Southeastern Center for Emerging Biological Threats (SECBT).

Entitled “Vaccines: Not Enough or Not Enough Time?”, the program features the world renowned St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital flu researchers, Robert Webster, Ph.D. and Richard J. Webby, PhD, as well as experts from around the country representing the CDC, SECEBT, Merck and Wyeth.
“The conference will address every aspect of the flu vaccine issue—from vaccine shortages and production issues to novel approaches for rapid development and quick response to emerging flu strains,” said Malak Kotb, PhD, UTHSC professor and director of the Mid-South Center for Biodefense and Security.

The Conference will be held from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 17 at the St Jude Conference Center.
